For years, the Philadelphia Flyers would have a revolving door at the position of captain. Since the retirement of Eric Desjardins, the Flyers have had a number of captains, including Keith Primeau, Peter Forsberg, and just recently Jason Smith.Every captain brought a particular feature to their leadership, but for whatever reason have not been long term. Now, the team feels that they have found their long term solution. Forward Mike Richards, a former first round draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers, has been projected to be one of the best leaders in Flyers’ history. He has drawn comparisons to Bob Clarke, former player and general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers.
The questions surround whether Richards can lead this team. After the season that Richards had in 2007/2008 where he went on to score 28 goals and notch 47 assists with an astonishing two five on three short handed goals, the Flyers believe he is ready to lead the team after deciding not to sign former captain Jason Smith. He is an all around team player. He is just as great with his defense as he is with his offense and has proven himself to be able to match up with some of the leagues best players. In the playoff series against the Washington Capitals, Richards publicly attacked Alexander Ovechkin for the number of dives he was taking in the series. Then in the playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Richards defended and antagonized Sidney Crosby and held him in check for the entire series.Richards appears to be ready to lead this team to greatness. Stremme did really well in his last race at Talladega in the Sprint Cup Series until he was crashed out of the event in the closing laps, so expect him to have a good showing. The Wallace boys are always good at Daytona and I wouldn’t be surprised if either of them finished in the top five or even won the race. It would be great to see a top-two finish with the Earnhardt’s sweeping the first two spots. My sleepers for this weekend are Mike Wallace, Kenny Wallace, David Stremme, and Mike Bliss in the Nationwide Series race. Kerry will be in good equipment as DEI has had great success in the past at Daytona I expect Kerry to have a good run and look for him and Jr to hook up in the draft and go to the front.
His older brother Kerry Earnhardt will be racing in the Nationwide Series race for Dale Earnhardt Inc. will not be the only Earnhardt competing in this weekends events. Earnhardt will definitely be a factor in both races this weekend as well, and I look for him to at least add one more victory to his total at Daytona after this weekend comes to a close.Earnhardt Jr. has a total of five career victories at Daytona in the Nationwide Series and two victories in the Sprint Cup Series. Look for Harvick to be a major contender in both races this weekend.Dale Earnhardt Jr. Harvick has achieved 10 top-five finishes in his 12 career starts at Daytona in the Nationwide Series. Harvick is a former winner of the Daytona 500 and has won the February Daytona race in the Nationwide Series back in 2007.
