A successful Beautification Fund Raising Program has been completed. Sponsors
purchased a 12 X 12 inch engraved paver. The donor pavers were placed at Herald
Court sidewalk. Funds raised were used to purchase beautification materials for
Marion Avenue and Hector House Plaza.
A new fund raising program has been initiated. Sponsors will purchase 4 X 8 inch
pavers to be placed in highly visible locations throughout the city. Proceeds
will help contribute to city beautification projects.
New & Completed Projects
Hector House Plaza & Park 2008
Citizens’ Master Plan 2005 envisions a park across from the Courthouse. TEAM
partnered with the City Staff which designed a parking area and plaza. This area
was planted and paved by TEAM volunteers over a period of one year. The planting
began on April 23, 2007.The final paver was laid on June 3, 2008. Fifteen
volunteers laid 4 ˝ pallets of pavers in 95 minutes! Punta Gorda is now blessed
with a pocket park commemorating Hector House where the original city charter
was signed.
Herald Court Brick Walkway 2007
City Staff asked TEAM to partner with them on the installation of the 15 to 18
foot brick paver walkway on Herald Court. This walkway extends from Taylor
Street to Route 41 North across from the Courthouse and behind the restaurant
area. The City did the site preparation work, procure the materials and finish
the landscaping and our volunteers installed the bricks along with two other
civic organizations. This approach had worked very successfully on the brick
streets in the residential historic district where the local residents laid he
bricks.
West Marion Avenue 2005
The City completed the site preparation including removing the old planters and
asphalt. They next replaced the rocky soil from under the asphalt. They also
provided and planted 30 large Foxtail palms on both sides of Marion Avenue. We
had very good success in securing the materials and services we needed at
discounted prices from local companies due to the community service nature of
the project. The Tree Store of Port Charlotte acquired all of our shrubs and
trees at discounted prices and planted the larger trees at no cost. Reliable
Sprinkler Systems of Punta Gorda installed the new sprinklers and our sod
supplier was Butwell Stone of Punta Gorda. We wish to thank all of these
companies for agreeing to become sponsors and help us enhance our town. We held
our “Planting Party” media event on Friday, December 16th with approximately 50
volunteers in attendance. Following the installation of the sprinkler system on
Monday, December 19th we had the sod installed by our volunteers on Wednesday,
December 21st. We are pleased that with the help of the City, our suppliers and
volunteers this project was completed before Christmas.
